Happy Birthday Kathleen

Paper Pinwheels (from the Block of the Day Collection)

I’m not sure of the exact date of Kathleen’s 70th birthday, but we are celebrating all weekend. We have a mini-retreat scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We’ll be stitching just up the hill from home and we’ll come home to our own beds every night.

Kathleen is the President of our Guild (so it’s good to be on her good side). Her most common colours are pink and green, although usually more pastel than the colours I had.

Organized chaos!

I cancelled my Thursday sewing because I knew Pat had a doctor’s appointment today and I wasn’t sure what time it would be. It was early this morning and I could have gone sewing but I had several things of my own that I wanted to get done so I stayed home. That Betsy Bag isn’t going anywhere (sadly) and it will still be there next time!

I managed the binding on one of my cards yesterday afternoon and got it hand stitched last night. This morning I put the binding on the second card and I’ll work on the hand stitching tonight. Next up was to finish off the Farmer’s Wife block that didn’t get done on Tuesday. I was almost finished it when I noticed a mistake so one part had to be taken out and done over. I was afraid I would run out of two of the fabrics but by using one piece over again I had enough.

The Splendid Sampler block was released today. I usually do those blocks on Sunday but since I’ll be at a mini-retreat all weekend I wanted to get it done today. I had been hoping for a pieced block and that was what today’s pattern was.

I’m working on my Farmer’s Daughter quilt this weekend so I wanted to sort through all the pieces that will make up a block and get everything bagged up. It doesn’t look organized; I tried to go with fabrics in each block that would look good together. I’m using a fabric line by Kaffe Fassett and even bits put together from the same piece of fabric don’t look the same. I’m going to go with what I’ve sorted; I’m not entirely sure this quilt will be something I like and I could sort and resort all weekend long and still not have it right. I’m hoping to get one or two blocks done over the weekend.

Plans have been underway for awhile for a visit from Kathryn and Dave. I was so excited when Elizabeth called and said they had booked a B&B on the beach for the end of July. She will overlap by a couple of days with Kathryn. Once this weekend is over it will be time to sort out the sleeping arrangements and some meals.

Another good day

My day is going well, in spite of the fact that I was up at 5:30 this morning. Pat needed to be at the hospital at 7:20 AM and last night we decided to leave at about 6:45 (giving us oodles of time). I was sound asleep when Pat woke me and told me it was 6:30; my alarm hadn’t gone off. Turns out his alarm when off at 5:15 (rather than 6:15 as it was supposed to) and it wasn’t time for mine to go off yet (at 6:00). My biggest challenge with Pat’s procedure was I had to drive his truck; after the cataract was removed he wasn’t able to drive. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and we were back home before nine.

I spent the rest of the morning finishing the basting on my English paper pieces. If I counted correctly I now have all the pieces basted for the 26 blocks that I need to put together. I hope to have some fun tonight putting together all the different colours and pieces into bags that will be easy to pick up and work on. The Farmer’s Daughter quilt is my project for the weekend at the mini-retreat.

After a quick trip to Cranberry Hall this afternoon I put together a couple of cards. I have one of them quilted and the other is sandwiched. If my luck holds I’ll get the binding on both of them and I can take them with me to Pat’s doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Judging from the number of folks getting cataract surgery today the office will be full tomorrow. He has an early appointment (9 AM) so maybe we’ll be in and out quickly.

Okay, back to those cards and then on to some fun putting blocks together – at least putting the pieces for blocks in separate bags.

A good day of sewing

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

It was my first real bee day in a couple of weeks and it was nice to catch up on all the news. I managed to get three of my Farmer’s Wife blocks finished, and one other about half done. I would have stayed to get that fourth one done but I ran out of bobbin thread and I thought that might be a sign to quit so I did. With the three blocks today that puts me at 100 done; only eleven left to go.

Since I did my running around yesterday I came straight home today. Can’t say I’ve done much since I got home but at least I’m at my computer now so a may accomplish something before supper.

Pat has to be at the hospital for his surgery tomorrow at 7:20 so it will be an early morning. I’ll take my book along; my understanding is that it is a very quick procedure so I wouldn’t have time to do much stitching.
