A Slow Fire Burning

Author: Paula Hawkins

Daniel has been gruesomely murdered on his houseboat in London. There are no shortage of suspects and each one of them comes with a backstory. When you add into the story all of the family and social connections between everyone you almost forget about the murder and who might have been responsible for it.

In the end, they were pretty much all guilty of something.

This is How I Lied

Author: Heather Gudenkauf

Teenagers Maggie and Eve were neighbours and best friends. One day, after an argument, Eve disappears. Later that day Maggie and Nola, Eve’s sister, find Eve dead in the caves near their homes. Maggie’s father was Chief of Police at the time but the case was never solved. There were no lack of suspects and when a new piece of evidence comes to light 25 years later Maggie, now a Detective on the police force, is tasked with reviewing the case.

There were parts of the story that were a little unbelievable but it was a good read.

Nine Perfect Strangers

Author: Liane Moriarty

We watched this series on Amazon Prime and when I saw the series was based on a book I wanted to read it. The author is one I’ve read and enjoyed before. I was curious how closely the book would follow the series and, for the most part, the stories unfolded the same.

Nine people have signed on to a 10-day retreat at a health and wellness centre. Each of them have issues they would like resolved whether or not they even admit to having such issues. Their course of “wellness” is a little unusual and experimental which leads them to a surprising conclusion.

The Other Mrs.

Author: Mary Kubica

I see from the cover of my book that this story is coming to Netflix so I’m glad I read it beforehand.

Sadie, Will and their two children have inherited a house in Maine due to the suicide of Will’s sister. They have also taken over custody of Will’s niece who isn’t particularly happy to see them. Sadie, a doctor, finds it hard to settle into their new life and when a neighbour down the street is murdered she gets a little paranoid. It doesn’t help when it appears that the local detective considers her a prime suspect.

All the way through the book I had several suspects in mind (and even guessed a small part of the story) but the ending was a surprise.

I was torn on the rating of this one but when in doubt I went with the higher rating.
