Vanished

Author: Mary McGarry Morris

I liked this book more than I thought I would, although there were parts that I found disturbing. A bit of a twist on the usual kidnapping story.

Aubrey is a very quiet and reserved man who is afraid of his wife and children, although he does love them. One day while Aubrey is working along on a job site Dotty appears out of nowhere and before Aubrey really knows what is happening the two have high-tailed it out of town in a stolen truck. Not long after, as Aubrey contemplates getting back to his wife, Dotty returns to the truck with child that they name Canny. Jump forward five years and Dotty is trying to sort out a way to get Canny back to her parent, collect the reward money and take off for Hollywood. Aubrey doesn’t like the plan but seems helpless to stand up for himself.

Moving a bit better

Tuesday, June 7, 2022

I didn’t have a very good day yesterday and spent most of it on the bed or the couch curled in the fetal position. Perhaps it helped because I’m moving better today and I’ve actually worked on a few things.

One thing I’ve learned is that I am unable to listen to an audio book unless I am sitting upright. Yesterday afternoon when I was laying on the couch I was trying to listen to a book and was constantly having to rewind after falling asleep. The same thing happened last night when I was listening in bed. I managed to listen to a chapter this morning while puttering around in the sewing room. I’ve also tried listening when I’m doing computer work but I end up not following the story or goofing up on the work I’m doing; apparently I’m unable to multi-task in this particular instance.

I’m pleased that things are falling into line for my trip. My eyeglass chain arrived yesterday and my box of sewing projects is out for delivery. It should be delivered by the end of the day today. We’ve even come up with a Plan B in case my back still isn’t better; Pat will drive me across on the ferry and to the airport and I won’t have to manage my backpack until I get to Saskatoon.

I got a start on a new card today. This one involves appliqué as well as some embroidery and some piecing. I originally thought I’d do some needle-turn appliqué but when I saw how small some of the pieces were I reverted to fusible web. I haven’t started the embroidery but I have lots of time to get it done.

I updated both the Guild and the Hall websites as well as answering a few messages regarding Hall rentals. I have a Board meeting coming up in a few minutes and I’m hopeful I have everything I need at my fingertips as moving to get something will be a slow process.

Still nursing my back

Sunday, June 5, 2022

I’m still nursing my back today – it’s about the same as yesterday.

I finished the hand stitching on the last project that I wanted done before my trip. But now, do I have time for one more?

I’ve also spent a lot of my day at my desk working on Hall business. Our year end was recent and I’m needing to get the books in order so they can be passed to the accountant fairly soon after I get home from my trip.

Slow moving

Saturday, June 4, 2022

Although my back is a bit better today I’m still not moving very fast. As it was yesterday, as long as I stay in the same position I have no pain but moving in any way can hurt. I’ve started using my yoga breathing for anytime I have to move (breath in and on the exhale change positions). I’m sitting for shorter periods of time and fortunately I have any number of places where I can sit for awhile and still accomplish something.

I had a couple of Hall booking requests this morning and I did some messaging back and forth; sitting at my computer desk is okay but getting up and down hurts a bit particularly if the chair rotates.

I sat at my stitching desk downstairs and managed to almost complete this week’s Botanical Garden clue. I’ll probably finish it this afternoon.

I’m able to sit for short periods at my sewing machine and I’ve been able to get the binding stitch onto my project. I have one more section of binding to stitch down and it will be finished.

I’m able to sit in my chair in the living room and play my games or do some hand stitching on my project.

I expect I’ll get some knitting done this evening. It doesn’t seem to make any difference which chair I sit in, it’s the movement that hurts.
