I better get this done now

Friday, August 30, 2019

I better get this post done now or the day will slip by as it did yesterday. I baked in the morning, went sewing in the afternoon and then we went out to Lund (again) for dinner. We wanted to support our friends Geoff and Scott who were playing their last night of the season.

Sewing was a bit frustrating. I thought I was set with my project already waiting for me at Gail’s. But just as I was going out the door I remembered that I was going to use the blocks for either my ruler workshop or my quilt-as-you-go workshop. In either of those cases the blocks didn’t need to be stitched together. So I ran upstairs and grabbed the container with my miniature in it.

It took no time at all to stitch the miniature blocks together and, of course, I hadn’t brought the fabric for the sashing between the columns. So I sewed together a block that was supposed to be my Leader and Ender for this year. Because so many of the fabric pieces have to match it isn’t working out all that well with the scraps I have cut, but I like the pattern (Shoo Fly) and I’ll continue cutting scraps for it and sewing blocks as I get a chance.

I moved on and trimmed my “real” Leader and Ender project blocks – a postage stamp quilt made with 1.5″ squares. I’m about ready to stitch one block together but I didn’t start it. I was rather daunted when Jesse told me she used more than 10,000 squares. With what remained of the afternoon I did some more embroidery on a card top.

This morning I was baking again. I’ve got two loaves sliced and on plates for the show at the Hall tonight. Pat is doing sound for the show so we’ll be heading out early.

Tomorrow I’ll be out at the Sunshine Musical Festival, possibly in the rain, so I won’t be posting.

Summer is ending

All the signs are telling me summer is over. The luxurious yachts and boats are heading south. Flocks of geese are gathering. Last night there was such a racket from a group of starlings (more than a hundred I’m sure) that they must be preparing to migrate. Some of the trees are starting to turn and occasionally I see leaves falling. It seems early but I don’t mind the cooler weather in the mornings and evenings.

I headed out to do some shopping first thing this morning. I needed to pick up some things for the Hall for the show tomorrow night. I expected to have to make a second trip to the health food store and the farmer’s market for a couple of other items but I was able to get them at the grocery store.

I’ve been at one desk or another for most of the day. I prepared tickets for the show at the Hall tomorrow night, and put together the tickets for the six Texada House Concerts. There was a bit of my personal paper work that I attended to. Last week while I was sorting through some photos I came across my journal from my West Coast Trail hike. I transcribed it and got lost in the online photos from the trail.

I still have a lot of Hall paper to sort through so I’d best get back to it.

Not as prepared as I thought

After bragging the other day about being packed up early for the bee I got my comeuppance today.

I headed out to the bee early as I wanted to stop at the post office. I was early enough that I thought I might be able to pop into the grocery store for some supplies for a show at the Hall on Friday.

I had my packages ready to go but it turned out that if I used one of their Express envelopes my costs would be cheaper. By the time I readdressed the package it was too late to stop for my supplies so I went off to the bee.

I pulled two bags from the car, along with my sewing machine and purse, and settled in. My machine was set up and I was ready to go. But when I reached for my project I realized that my project bag was still at home. Not to worry, I had a miniature that still needed some work. But when I pulled it out I realized that the fabric I needed was in the project bag.

I made a quick trip home, collected my missing bag, and headed back to the bee. I had some difficulty with the card top I was making – it was my second time around because I didn’t really like the first one I made. Now that the second one is done I’m wondering if maybe the third time would be the charm. I haven’t decided yet whether or not I’ll try it again.

I made a bit of progress on my miniature. Some of the fabric is directional and some of my blocks were going in the wrong direction. I have them fixed now and the blocks are ready to sew together – something for next week.

I had someone dropping by the house after sewing but on my way home I had just enough time to stop at the bank.

Back at it

Monday, August 26, 2019

I’ve had a couple of down days – no energy, no interest in anything and relatively no progress on anything. I don’t know if I was depressed, bored, or just lazy. For the better part of those two days I knit and watched TV. I felt guilty wasting my time that way but the packages I need to get in the mail tomorrow were wrapped on Friday, my projects for Tuesday were already packed and ready to go, and I was caught up on my Hall work and my reports for tonight’s meeting were pretty much ready to print.

This morning I finalized my reports, made a few related phone calls and then did a bit of cross stitching. While I had lunch I did a bit of knitting in front of the TV, but this time stopped after one episode of Midsomer Murders. I’ll go back to my stitching now until it is time to go.

I think I work better when I have a deadline to meet.
