Felting workshop #2

Saturday, November 23, 2019

This was a weekend of craft shows – I attended four of them. I never intend to purchase anything and I somehow always bring something home. My purchases today (gifts) were from one of our junior quilters from a few years ago – she is all grown up, graduating this year, and has turned her attention to photography. I also knew her Mum from my BOND days when she attended with Abbey’s baby sister; that baby sister is now about to become a junior member!

After checking out the craft shows I stopped in at the thrift store; I was in the market for a new-to-me ironing board. I took my ironing board to Texada but I miss having one at home. Quite a bargain for $2.

Then I was off to a felted ornament workshop at the library. I was early for the class so found myself checking out an Anne Cleeves book (the first one of the Vera series). I took a needle felting class at the wool shop a few years ago; I remember I enjoyed doing it although all I was making was drier balls. I have no clue where the almost-finished project is but I hope to find it again and perhaps do some more.

But today’s class was all about wet felting. One of our quilters had signed up for the class but wasn’t able to attend so she offered me her spot. The process is messier than needle felting but it was much more fun. My finishes were less like ornaments than some but I think I’ll use them as pin cushions. They take almost a week to dry and then I think I’ll offer one to Barb who gave me her spot (it was a free class).

It’s blowing up a storm tonight so I’m heading down for a serious amount of knitting.

I’d rather be doing paperwork

5 AM seems to be my new 7 AM. Ever since my trip to Saskatoon and then arriving home a day after the time change I can’t seem to sleep beyond five. Don’t get me wrong, I usually stay in bed until six but I’d love to sleep late one morning – maybe nine!

I finished another ornament this morning – #11. All of a sudden it dawned on me that if I’m counting down 12 days to Christmas Santa (who I was thinking would be my #12) should really be my #1 (as in one more day until Christmas). I thought there was still time to change all the numbering on the ornaments but as I was re-arranging them I realized (thankfully) that since Santa (#1) wasn’t done, all I really needed to do was add a 2 to my current #1 ornament and I was okay. Thank goodness I got that right before starting to take out all those numbers. Santa is the only one left and then I need to put on some backings and strings to hang them with.

I’ve been doing laundry most of the day – and my last load is probably ready to go in the washer now. I washed the bedding from the upstairs bedrooms after our last concert performers but I forgot about the bedroom in the basement. And I hadn’t washed any of the towels so there was a lot to do. I washed the floor mats from the bathrooms (dang it, I forgot the one in the basement) so while everything is out I should scrub the floors before they go back in.

I walked up to the bank this morning to make a Hall deposit. I needed a new day timer for 2020 so I walked over to Staples. Actually I stopped at the $ store first but they didn’t have any. I’m trying to walk on the days when I don’t have many errands to run or too many things to carry.

After lunch I started cleaning out my sewing room. It is a slow process and, for the most part, I’m moving things from one room to the other. I’m only doing that until I get all the furniture rearranged and then I’ll have to try and move it all back in somewhere. I’m not convinced I’ll have more room once things are changed but I don’t think it will be any worse.

I’ll spend the afternoon on cleaning, maybe have a nap (because I was up so early) and then I’ll knit tonight. I’m enjoying the scarf pattern but I don’t think I’m going to get it done in time for the sale.

Busy day

I’ve been busy today, especially this morning, but I got a lot done.

While I had my coffee I worked on an ornament for my 12 Days ‘Til Christmas set that I hope to sell at the Texada craft sale – ten down, two more to go.

I wasn’t quite finished before I realized it was garbage and recycle day. That took a bit of time to sort out and get to the curb; I wanted the garbage bag to be full (we pay $2 a bag) so I emptied garbage from all the bedrooms, bathrooms and even my sewing room. Next up was the recycling – only one bin but again I picked up what I had in my sewing room/office. Since I was at it I decided to sort through the recycling that needed to go to the depot.

It was almost eleven by the time I got back to my ornament. When that was finished I blocked the crocheted scarf I finished last night. I was worried there wouldn’t be enough yarn to make a scarf long enough; I got the length I needed but I wasn’t able to do the border around the outside. I’ll make the pattern again and add the border.

By the time that was done I decided I’d have time to get to the depot before it was time to leave for sewing. Not only did I get that job done but I was able to cross another errand off my list.

I thought our group was going to start a new project this week but just in case the others weren’t ready I stuck in another project. I’m glad I did as Jessie was sick so there was just the two of us – and four cats! Gail has taken on a couple more cats who were losing their home.

After sewing I headed to the Hall to check the mailbox. I’d received word that a few renters had dropped their payments in the mailbox. I have some other deposits here at home so I’ll plan to walk up to the bank tomorrow.

This evening I’m going to start another scarf. I may not have time to finish it before the sale but it is an easy pattern and done on big needles so there may be a chance.

So much to do

I got so involved in sorting out the Hall bookings yesterday afternoon (yes, I managed to work out the deposits) that I totally forgot about my journal and the Guild blog. I was up at 5:30 this morning though so had the Guild work done before seven.

And I have more work to do. Yesterday after sewing I moved my bins out of the spot where I wanted my new-to-me glass cabinet to go. Pat is back and forth from Texada and we wanted to get it off the back step. Silly me thought it would just fit perfectly where I wanted it to go but, of course, it didn’t. I cleared out a few more bins and by saying “I cleared out a few more bins” I mean I moved them into the centre of the room along with all the other piles of stuff. We managed to get the cabinet upstairs but Pat has devised a way that I can maybe get more space by changing the location of the cabinet. That involves moving some yarn bins downstairs, clearing out a dresser and moving it, and then shifting the glass cabinet. It never ends.

Moreen and I went for a walk this morning – hopefully we can get back to it on a more regular schedule. With all I had to do it was either the best thing for me or the worst thing – I’m still deciding which of those it was.

I don’t know where the afternoon went. I got through most of the paperwork for the Hall and got the agenda out for the meeting on Monday. There will be work to do between now and the meeting but I feel like I have most of it sorted out. I shredded some paper, had a nap and sorted out a few of my sale items that were taking up space on my desk extension.

I have a meeting tonight (100+ Women Who Care) and although I could skip it I wouldn’t have a chance to vote on who I want my money to go to – I wouldn’t even know who the candidates were. They are short meetings so I’ll sit in the sun and try to finish another scarf before heading out.
