A Covid Quilt Top

Tuesday, June 16, 2020 (Day/Block 92)

Magic Box

I had fun with today’s block. I didn’t use the colours that were shown in the photo because it meant having to cut into some yardage and I’m really trying to make these daily blocks from my scraps. This was an easy one to put a story to. It’s spring (do you see the strawberries) and we are in a magic box keeping us safe but we are surrounded by that covid bug!

I had quite a collection of 12″ daily blocks so I put them together into my first Covid-19 top. I did a lot of rearranging, had Stacia and Deloise help me out and I’m happy with the results. Since I’m not sure if this will be a donation quilt I’m not in a rush to get it sandwiched and quilted. Over the past couple of days my count on several other sized blocks is increasing and I’ve spent some time with my design book and I have another two tops planned out. I’ll wait a bit longer before putting anything together so I have choices in the blocks that go together best.

I’ve finished sewing early today so I’m going to spend some time at my computer. I have 19 items showing in my task list – some of them are just reminders but there are others that I should take care of. And if I get bored there are the minutes from last night’s Hall meeting I could work on.

Pat has an online thing tonight so I’ll get a bit more of my book read.

I need a reading week

Kite

I had another call from the library today – they have another book for me. I went online and I see that I have one more book on order. Hopefully I’ll have at least one of my current books finished before I get a call about that one. If we were on Texada (we’re not), and if the weather was nice (it isn’t here), I could be spending my days in the hammock reading.

I was actually looking forward to doing some quilting today. I already knew what I was going to do on the quilt and it was all straight lines. This is the quilt I sandwiched on the weekend; it’s I good thing I did it then as it has been rainy all day today.

I have time to carry on with my quilting but I’m going to put it aside and do a bit of reading. I have a Cranberry Hall meeting tonight (via Zoom) and I need to be relaxed for that.

Clean up and cross stitch

Salute

You can imagine that the photo on the calendar made use of red, white and blue as a salute to you-know-what-country. I’m not sure what mine represents but it feels more worldly than American.

I did enough cleaning up yesterday that I was able to cut a width of fabric for one of my quilts. But there was still lots to be done today. I marked a bunch of fabric squares for more pinwheels; these will be my leaders and enders next week once the sampler blocks are together. I didn’t deal with my scraps last week so the basket was full; each week I get a few more scraps organized but I should probably take a week and get them completely done.

This afternoon I’ve moved on to cross stitching. The project isn’t a favourite by any means and I’ll be glad when it is done; and to get there I have to keep working at it.

Piles

Honey Bee

It took until almost noon to finish my daily block – my leaders and enders were a bit longer than usual. I had finished stitching my pinwheels for the next two rows of my scrap quilt so I needed something else. I had a pile of my daily blocks set aside to put into a sampler quilt so I started sewing them together as my leaders and enders. It takes more time but I feel like I’m accomplishing something with almost every stitch.

My usual quilting day isn’t until Monday but I took advantage of the fact that there was only a very light breeze and I sandwiched a quilt on the deck. I’ve added that to my pile of quilting that needs to be done. I have five quilts that are sandwiched and in the quilt line-up and another bin of I-don’t-know-how-many that need backings and then sandwiched.

My pile of things to take to the Guild tailgate party is growing. I have at least three of the blocks of the month, my mystery quilt, my Challenge project, and three donation quilts – I’ll need a truck to get them all there (LOL). We’ve been challenged to make a Covid-19 decorated mask for the event; mine will be quilt related and I’ve set aside several things that will be attached to it.

I’ll get back to my sample quilt for what’s left of the afternoon.
