I should just quit

Friday, April 30, 2021

I spent the day making a couple of cards. It takes about half a day for each card top and sometimes longer if they include appliqué or embroidery. One of the cards today had both and the other one had only appliqué. I pieced batting for the three cards in this group and cut out backing for them as well.

I generally spend another half day on each card between sandwiching, quilting and binding. Pat has an online event late this afternoon so I thought I’d get a head start on the above-mentioned tasks.

But first I wanted to check my messages and also check in on Facebook in case there was something I needed to know. There wasn’t but I fell down the rabbit hole anyway. Then I played a few games of Solitaire before I remembered something I wanted to Google. No results for my Google search but I fell down another rabbit hole.

So instead of making progress and maybe getting a little ahead of schedule on my cards I’ve wasted a lot of time. I might as well have quit when I had the tops finished but I’m going back to the sandwich and quilting and maybe tomorrow I can have a shorter day.

It adds up

I woke up with a headache this morning. I don’t get them often anymore and I seldom feel the need to go back to bed after taking medication but I did today. I’m not sure what triggered it – allergies maybe, or the change in weather of late.

I didn’t feel like doing much when I got up but I sat at my computer all morning; the time just flies when I’m working on computer projects. After checking my mail and seeing that my points at one of the fabric shops were going to expire I looked for a backing fabric that would work for one of my Christmas quilts. No luck so I looked at a different shop and ordered some. Just a few minutes after placing my order I got a notice that they didn’t have enough of the fabric; I looked again and told them about a replacement fabric. There wasn’t enough of that either so I picked out three different fabrics and eventually got enough of one of them. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted but it will work.

Then I was on hold with the Land Titles Office on behalf of the Hall. The hold music was so bad and after 20 minutes I thought my headache was getting worse, not better. At the end of the call (I got my question answered) I told the woman (very nicely) that their music was horrible. She laughed and said she never called the number but she would pass my message along.

I got some paperwork and reports ready for the Hall meeting on Monday and then started in on more of the Guild archives. I was about to quit when I got THE phone call from the accountant regarding our income tax. That is all taken care of now. No wonder I have a headache!

I started working on another batch of cards this afternoon but it is going very slowly. I’m going to blame it on my headache but that probably has nothing to do with why the seams are going in the wrong direction and pieces are being stitched upside down.

I’m quite sad too because I knew there was a mistake on one of the rows of That Fairy Tale Quilt. I fixed it once, and then fixed my fix and decided I could live with it. But now that it is all put together and I’ve seen it laying on the floor and in photos I know I have to go back and do it right.

Just another headache to add to my day!

A bit of catching up

Wednesday, April 28, 2021

I was up early this morning and spent some time at my desk catching up on some of my own paperwork as well as some for the Guild and the Hall. By eight I was ready for breakfast and my coffee but I was back sewing before nine.

I have the centre portion of That Fairy Tale Quilt finished – far from perfect but I’m celebrating the finish. The borders (four of them) still need to go on. Jack’s beanstalk goes on one side and Rupunzel’s Tower goes on the other side. There are five pages of instructions for putting on the top border (the sky) and slightly fewer pages for the bottom border (the ground). I won’t get back to this one again before the end of the month so, as far as my UFO Challenge goes, I’m done for now.

I needed to get a few cards in the mail today but when Pat called me at 11:45 to see if I wanted lunch I realized I needed to be at the letter box before noon. I thought I’d make it in time but it was raining so I decided to wait until after lunch and I drove to the post office. I needed more stamps so I feel like I justified the trip. Of course when I got home I had a message from the library that I have a book ready for pick up. I guess I’ll go out again tomorrow.

I’m going to make some Brownies this afternoon and after that I need to find a new knitting project for tonight.

I thought I was done

It’s been another day of That Fairy Tale Quilt. I put the last row together and was excited at the thought of stitching the centre four rows together. I put it all out on the floor across the hall from my sewing room and noticed that the top two rows were just a tad shorter than the bottom two rows.

I took another look at the pattern and realized that on both of those rows I had missed a 1″ border piece. Whew – no ripping out and fudging seams (at least at this point).

I also noticed that I have to put a sashing between each of the rows and, of course, those sashing rows are made up of three or more pieces so there will be a lot more stitching required before any of the rows come together.

I had hoped to get back to some cards tomorrow but I’m determined to get the centre of this finished before moving on. It is my April UFO Challenge project and although it will be far from complete having the centre put together will make for a good stopping place until I pick it up again.
