Best Friends (from the Splendid Sampler series)

I tell everyone that cousins are the best friends so this seemed an easy choice for Roberta’s birthday. I love pinwheels and anything that looks like a pinwheel so it was fun to make. I did some (almost) straight-line quilting within those tiny squares.

When I do small blocks with a lot of pieces I’m never certain whether I should practice my piecing skills or go for the easier paper-piecing pattern. I chose to piece this card for Trevor because I didn’t have a lot of fabric in these colours and paper-piecing takes a lot more fabric.

September birthdays must be fun for kids. They are back at school with their friends and the weather is often warm; there are lots of options for parties both inside and out.

And the pencils and crayons at school are still mostly new!

This block (from the Splendid Sampler series) was release right after I made Jackie’s card. I saw it as an opportunity to do more practicing on my Satin stitch (which I was previously calling a zig-zag). I made a few adjustments to the length and width of the stitches and I’m much happier with the results.

My colour inspiration came from the flower bed across the street at City Hall. They have a continuously changing planting of flowers to reflect the seasons.
