Happy Birthday Regan & Thekla

September 4, 2021

I usually make the same card in different fabrics for these two birthdays but I ran out of time this year and I had to dig into my stash of blocks so they each received a different one. They are individuals after all so they deserve something all their own even on a shared birthday.

Bobbin Chase

Regan’s card is from the original Splendid Sampler series. I had trouble finding the name of the pattern as my colour choices are very different from the ones in the book and it looked like a totally different block. Dare I say I liked my choices better?

Happy Willow
(from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

Thekla has trees on their farm so the willow tree seemed suitable but I know they need a lot of water and it has been particularly dry in Saskatchewan this year. Fortunately, this tree won’t suffer from a drought.

Octopus (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

I dreaded making this card as the appliqué was quite intricate. However, once I cut out a few of the objects it went together quite well. I worried about having enough legs on the octopus and, if you use your imagination, I think I have eight.

Ron has spent quite a bit of time out on the boat this summer but I doubt he has seen any octopuses.

Potted Paislies (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

I had my first fresh fig off a tree not long ago and if I hadn’t already picked the colours for this card I might have made a change. To me, those potted paislies look a lot like the shape of the fig. Mind you, the colours I picked aren’t exactly paisley anyway.

The appliqué on the card went very quickly – do I dare admit I kind of like appliqué now?

Happy Birthday Vicki

Out on a Limb (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

Why oh why do they put so many small pieces into a 6″ square? There are 57 pieces in this small block.

I was able to pull twelve half-square triangles from my scrap bin and that certainly saved me some time. I’ve lost a few points on the edges and not everything matches as it should be I’m happy to strike another pattern off this list.

Vicki is a very organized person and I doubt that she has ever found herself out on a limb.
