Happy Birthday Ron

Star Plus (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

I thought this was going to be the last of my Splendid Sampler blocks and, in my head, I was already saying I had saved the last card for the best of the recipients. Sorry Ron, but there are still two more left.

I more or less followed the colour combination from the book; it is amazing how much better things look when I don’t just “wing it” with whatever fabric I have in my scrap bin. It is mostly paper-pieced, with a bit of regular piecing added in.

Calendar Block – August

Puzzle Cube by Carolina Moore (Always Expect Moore)

I didn’t particularly care for the calendar block in the series I’ve been following so I found my own – a Rubik’s Cube. I was really looking forward to doing this block but it turned out to be much harder than I anticipated. And in spite of getting the Y-seam all lined up the block is a bit wonky. When I checked with Deloise she suggested I might be able to “quilt it into submission” and that is exactly what I did.

It isn’t perfect but Alex likes it so what more could I want.

Happy Birthday Deloise

My Happy Place (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

You can’t be surprised that I duplicated Stacia’s card to give to Deloise.

I used a different background as I felt perhaps the white sewing machine didn’t show up as well as it should have on Stacia’s block. Everything else is the same, except perhaps for the alignment of the blocks on the design wall.

In the future hope to spend more days in Deloise’s Happy Place!

Happy Birthday Stacia

My Happy Place (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

It worked out perfectly that one of the few remaining blocks in this Splendid Sampler series is called My Happy Place. Stacia, Deloise and I recently spent a week in Deloise’s Happy Place (she even has a sign saying that). I think it is safe to say that both Stacia and I agree that Deloise’s Happy Place is our Happy Place.

I modified the pattern a bit by adding the tape measure (rather than embroidering a needle and tape measure). I used some of Mum’s fabrics on the design wall (which is actually made from batting). Rather than stitch around the appliqué shapes I did some straight-line quilting that caught at least some part of all the pieces.

Rather than facing or binding I again used the rotary pinking shears (thank you Stacia) to finish the edges.
