Dead March for Penelope Blow

Author: George Bellairs

Some of the best mystery writers come out of the UK. This one was published in 1951 so it is a bit dated but as I read it (on my Kindle) I could see the story playing out as a TV show. There are lots of odd characters and I didn’t sort out the mystery until very near the end of the book. There are a number of books starring Inspector Littlejohn – this was #18 in the series.

Sweet Tea Tuesdays

Author: Ashley Farley

It has been awhile since I read a book on my Kindle. Are the books shorter or are they easier and faster to finish? Whatever the reason I seem to skip through them in no time at all. Or maybe I read them so fast because there isn’t a lot of depth in the stories.

Georgia, Midge and Lula have been sharing sweet tea on Georgia’s deck at least once a week for more than twenty years. But all that is about to change as relationships begin and end and an unexpected death takes one of the friends.

Sins of the Mother

Author: Irene Kelly

I brought this book home from Kathryn’s one trip but I think I may have given it to her as a gift at one time.

It is a powerful testimony, written by a ghost writer, about how the lives of an entire generation were changed forever from the abuse the mother suffered both in her home and in an Irish orphanage. The story is told from the point of view of three members of the family – the mother, her second husband, and their daughter. But the entire family was affected.

I couldn’t help but think of the stories that came out of the Residential Schools in Canada. It wasn’t an easy book to read solely because of the topic.

The Golden Son

Author: Shilpi Somaya Gowda

This was a recommendation from a friend, although I had already read her previous book and enjoyed it.

Anil is the eldest son of a prominent family in India. He moves to the US to complete his internship and residency in Texas. Although many in his family assume he will return to India, Anil hopes to become a specialist through several more years of training. When his father dies Anil is under even more pressure to return, and his love for a childhood sweetheart is also pulling him back.
