The storm continues

Monday, October 25, 2021

It didn’t seem like much of a storm overnight – we heard the wind but no more than we often do. The power fluctuation yesterday afternoon triggered a sensor in our furnace and it stopped working. It wasn’t until the house started feeling a bit cool that we checked into it. We had to call a technician; he came right away and didn’t charge us for resetting the device. It didn’t take long for the house to warm up again.

This morning the wind started up in earnest; none of the ferries have run since last night and the service notices just keep getting longer and longer. The wind blows, the rain comes down in sheets, everything stops for a bit and then it all starts up again. Peggy and Bill were going to come across for a visit tomorrow but, due to the weather, we’ll have to pick another time for our lunch date.

I went out this afternoon to put up a few posters for an upcoming show at the Hall. I thought I was going during a break – it was windy but no rain. The first place I was headed was closed and by the time I got down the street to the next one the rain had started but it still wasn’t too windy. The next stop (just up the street) had me heading out in both wind and rain. On my drive to the last stop the rain was running down the side windows of my car in sheets but by the time I left the building the sun was making a brief appearance.

We’re back to rain and wind again now. I did some work on my 12-Day packages this morning but I think I’ll go downstairs now and do some cross stitching.

Thunderbird

I can’t say for sure how long it took me to finish this; the first photo I can find of it is from 2020 when only the centre portion was complete. I purchased the pattern before Michael’s stores were open in the West; I think it came from Crafts Canada which doesn’t appear to exist any longer. It wasn’t until we purchased the Texada studio that I got serious about stitching it.

When I first bought the pattern I looked forward to making it. After a few months of stitching I began to wonder whether it was appropriate for me, who doesn’t share the First Nations culture, to be making it at all. I had a few other patterns with Native designs and I sold them on one of the Facebook groups I belong to.

I spent most of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation working on the Thunderbird. Now that it is finished I think of the project as honouring our First Nations. I will proudly hang it next to the Maple Leaf I finished for Canada’s 150th.

Stormy weather

The storm has arrived – apparently the worst in BC history. I was out this morning while it was raining lightly but it is just past noon and the wind is whipping the leaves off the trees and sending them every which way but down to the ground. The rain is coming down sideways.

I’ve done a bit of work in my studio but the power has flickered a couple of times so I’ll turn my computer off and head downstairs to do some cross stitching. The windows down there give more light but I’ll take a couple of my best stitching lights down in case the power goes out.

It’s a theory

October 23, 2021

Just as things were starting to open up this summer a friend was visiting and he mentioned that they had had company at their house and he said, after so long with no visits, he found it hard to keep conversations going. I’m working on a theory that just might fit his scenario.

A week ago Thursday was my first in-person sewing day. I enjoyed myself thoroughly but when I got home I was so tired I couldn’t even find enough energy to write my Journal. I don’t remember if I did any crocheting that night but I was certainly fine for the next two days of sewing with Stacia and Deloise.

Yesterday afternoon I had a two-hour Guild meeting to firm up the program for this year. There were six of us there and, although the Chair wasn’t well organized, we sorted out a few demos and classes. Again, when I got home I was so tired I didn’t even bring my notes upstairs. And I sat all evening in my chair and didn’t make a stitch in anything.

My theory is that I may have to work at the art of social gatherings after so long away from them.
