Accomplishments

Monday, September 26, 2022

I like to accomplish something every day; sometimes it isn’t a complete finish but I like to at least move ahead on something. Today my accomplishment is finishing a new book – Still Life with Bread Crumbs. As I was reading about the author I see that she has several other books of fiction; in fact there are seven other books as well as several books of non-fiction. I also see that some of her books have been made into either TV shows or movies, and I think we may have seen one of them. No surprise that I’ve added all of them to my “want to read” list. I’m not even put off by the fact that in an interview with the author she says that Still Life with Bread Crumbs is the first book that has a happy ending.

I am so grateful that Kathryn is going to come to Powell River to see me through my surgery and a few days of recovery afterwards. It won’t be a visit but I will be thankful to have her around to tell me what I should or shouldn’t be doing – if indeed I’m feeling well enough to be doing anything.

As far as accomplishments go that is it for the day – unless you count the endless puzzles and games I’ve gone through in my iPad. It was definitely my most relaxed day in ages!

Still Life with Bread Crumbs

Author: Anna Quindlen

UPDATE: This is one of the books included in Kathryn’s 2025 birthday bag. I saw the idea on Facebook and decided to pass it along. On her birthday Kathryn received a bag of books (second hand that I’ve pre-read) each wrapped in brown paper. The idea was that once a month (on her birthdate) she could pick a book to read. Each book included a bookmark of some sort.

Maybe it’s because I haven’t read a really good book in so long that I rushed through this one. It wasn’t necessarily one that I couldn’t put down but I was truly interested in the characters and their story.

Rebecca is a sixty-year old photography artist who had great success in her earlier years. But she has gone out of style and she has money troubles for the first time in her life. She decides to rent out her expensive New York apartment and moves to a cabin in the woods. The people she meets in the town are quirky but she comes to love her new life. The photos she takes in her new environment bring her back into the artistic spotlight.

Happy Birthday Laurie

September 26, 2022

When I was picking a card for Laurie from my already prepared blocks this is the only one I thought I could associate with him. Because they are planning a move I thought a new house might be appropriate. I’m not sure what I’ll do next year when he is actually getting ready to move into their new home.

I don’t think this is one of the Splendid Sampler blocks but I couldn’t tell you where it did come from.

I’m way behind

Yesterday afternoon I got down to my workshop to do some sewing. I didn’t want to light a fire so I took a heater with me. By the time I did a bit of cleaning up I was warm enough to take off my sweater and turn off the heater. I had hoped to finish a clue for my summer mystery but I quit before it was finished. I got my 36-nine patches ready to sew together and maybe I’ll have time to move on to the next step.

While I was on my computer this morning I noticed that I hadn’t added the book I am currently reading into Goodreads. I’ve read 18 books so far this year but, sadly, I’m 18 books behind to complete my reading goal. Even if I finish the three books I have set out for reading on this trip I won’t be caught up by much. I expect there will be time to read more next month as I’m recovering.

I managed to get my nine-patches done today and I stuck up half of the 36 final blocks so they will be ready for sewing together – maybe tomorrow. Pat has gone back home this afternoon – AGM and the monthly Coffee House at the Hall. It was a good idea to time the AGM with the Coffee House as there should be at least a few folks attending.

I may do nothing tonight or I might do some of my stamped cross stitch. Right now I’m feeling pretty lazy and sitting outside in the sun is making me sleepy.
