There’s always another way

Thursday, September 29, 2022

Tuesday night I had a terrible sleep because I kept thinking of that quilt top. The majority of folks liked the third (and most difficult) option but I knew I would have trouble aligning all the blocks properly. So when I got up Wednesday morning I was determine to use the first (and easiest) layout – at that point getting it done was more important than any artistic concerns.

Pat offered to go down to the workshop with me because he wanted to try something a bit different. I liked what he came up with but again, it was going to be difficult. I thought it showed off the floral fabric which is what I liked about the first and simplest layout. I powered on and hoped to have the top done by the evening.

Mid-afternoon, after ripping out various seams I made one more alignment mistake and gave up in disgust. But this morning I was back at it. I got the reverse stitching done, the seams sewn in the right order and I’m very happy with it. I’m not sure though if I’m happy because it is done or because I really like it.

So many choices

I’ve been down in the workshop most of the day and it is time to make some decisions. Now that the blocks are all done I have to decide which layout I want for this quilt.

This was the first option suggested by the designer. I like it – it is simple and it wouldn’t be hard to get the blocks going in the right direction.

This was the second option suggested by the designer. I like it too – but I’ve made quite a few quilts recently with a similar layout.

This is an option that Deloise came up with when she put her blocks together without the help of the designer’s photos. I like it but it will be so hard to keep those blocks going in the right order so as not to mess up the pattern.

What do you think?

Accomplishments

Monday, September 26, 2022

I like to accomplish something every day; sometimes it isn’t a complete finish but I like to at least move ahead on something. Today my accomplishment is finishing a new book – Still Life with Bread Crumbs. As I was reading about the author I see that she has several other books of fiction; in fact there are seven other books as well as several books of non-fiction. I also see that some of her books have been made into either TV shows or movies, and I think we may have seen one of them. No surprise that I’ve added all of them to my “want to read” list. I’m not even put off by the fact that in an interview with the author she says that Still Life with Bread Crumbs is the first book that has a happy ending.

I am so grateful that Kathryn is going to come to Powell River to see me through my surgery and a few days of recovery afterwards. It won’t be a visit but I will be thankful to have her around to tell me what I should or shouldn’t be doing – if indeed I’m feeling well enough to be doing anything.

As far as accomplishments go that is it for the day – unless you count the endless puzzles and games I’ve gone through in my iPad. It was definitely my most relaxed day in ages!

I’m way behind

Yesterday afternoon I got down to my workshop to do some sewing. I didn’t want to light a fire so I took a heater with me. By the time I did a bit of cleaning up I was warm enough to take off my sweater and turn off the heater. I had hoped to finish a clue for my summer mystery but I quit before it was finished. I got my 36-nine patches ready to sew together and maybe I’ll have time to move on to the next step.

While I was on my computer this morning I noticed that I hadn’t added the book I am currently reading into Goodreads. I’ve read 18 books so far this year but, sadly, I’m 18 books behind to complete my reading goal. Even if I finish the three books I have set out for reading on this trip I won’t be caught up by much. I expect there will be time to read more next month as I’m recovering.

I managed to get my nine-patches done today and I stuck up half of the 36 final blocks so they will be ready for sewing together – maybe tomorrow. Pat has gone back home this afternoon – AGM and the monthly Coffee House at the Hall. It was a good idea to time the AGM with the Coffee House as there should be at least a few folks attending.

I may do nothing tonight or I might do some of my stamped cross stitch. Right now I’m feeling pretty lazy and sitting outside in the sun is making me sleepy.
