The sound of silence

Wednesday, November 21, 2018

Apparently our phone is out. It didn’t ring last night but that isn’t unusual except that Pat and I usually talk in the evening when he is on Texada. We had chatted electronically during the day so I didn’t think much about it. When I went to bed last night I checked again for messages and Pat had been trying to contact me.

This morning I began the long process of logging a call with Telus. After about ten minutes of verifying my account they told me that it was handled by another section of their business so I had to start all over again with someone new. There were additional questions regarding the account but I had Pat on another Chat call so was able to get some answers. Basically after probably twenty minutes, in which nothing was done, I was told that the earliest a technician could come was Friday morning at eleven.

I pleaded that I didn’t have a cell phone as an alternate, I was a senior and if I had an emergency I wouldn’t be able to dial 911. All that got me was a promise to escalate the call and a “please be careful until we get the problem resolved”. I was supposed to hear back from someone about a better time, but so far I am still waiting.

I’m a little like Dad in that I don’t really like the phone and I don’t really miss it. However, there were several things I wanted to do today that can’t be done because I’m sitting here waiting for something to happen. I have a feeling that I’m going to be waiting until that Friday at eleven appointment comes around.

It was a good day

I was up early this morning (before six) but I got quite a bit done before it was time to head out to the bee. It didn’t go unnoticed by the group that I was sewing with my machine today; for the past several weeks (or maybe months) I’ve been hand stitching my Farmer’s Daughter blocks. There are a few birthdays (and cards) due in December so I made a start on them.

While I was stitching I made the comment that you knew it was a good day when the ripper didn’t need to come out of my toolbox until after lunch. And once it came out it seemed to be in use for the rest of the afternoon. I have three card tops finished and I moved on to a bonus Splendid Sampler block before things went so wrong I wasn’t able to recover from the error even with my ripper in hand. Only a couple of blocks will need to be redone but I didn’t have any spare fabric with me.

From there I moved on to my Medallion Mystery project. When I was at the retreat I was missing some fabric so I now have the final row done for the first week of clues. I made a start on clue two of my Christmas mystery but the day was over before I finished. I’m making 68 three-inch nine patches so it’s going to take awhile. Both mysteries are on the same schedule, currently at week four.

I picked up a deposit from this past weekend’s Cranberry Hall event. I have a showing at the Hall tomorrow so before supper I’ll get a deposit ready.

Quite a productive day

I had a lovely, quiet weekend (and more) at the studio. I planned to work on some Christmas ornaments but when I went to my cupboard I couldn’t find them. Generally I keep my cross stitch and needlepoint at the studio and sewing, knitting and crochet at home in Powell River. I guess the last time I was on Texada I thought (silly me) that I would have time to work on the ornaments at home. I have now located said ornaments and as the calendar moves along I may need to find time to work on them quite soon. I wasn’t without work though as the Princess is always needing more work. I got a good chunk done but no matter how many hours I spend at it I don’t feel a whole lot closer to being done.

We stuck quite close to home while on Texada; we went out for dinner one night, out to a Variety Show another night, and out for breakfast one morning. I kept referring to the Variety Show as a Talent Show – I couldn’t have been more wrong! I admire the folks who were on stage, but we couldn’t take any more and left before it was over. The evening wasn’t a complete wipe-out though as I won a door prize.

I had a lot of catching up to do when I got home – e-mail, errands, and Cranberry Hall work. I was able to plough through it all quite quickly and had some time this afternoon to cut out some projects for the bee tomorrow.

My book was due back at the library and I went prepared with the names of two other books I wanted. I also picked up another Ann Cleeves book; I just watched season three of Shetland and couldn’t resist looking for another of her books.

I’ll do a bit of tidying up in my sewing room and then I’m off to hand stitch the last (hopefully) Farmer’s Daughter block.

Not exactly as planned

Pat had an appointment this morning so we agreed he’d do a walk-on from Texada and we would both do a walk-on back on the noon ferry. He was up early so caught an early ferry and I met him for breakfast. Then we went our separate ways and planned to meet up again for the noon ferry.

I barely was home from running a few errands when Pat called to say his appointment was done and, if I was ready, we could probably make the 10:40 ferry. I wasn’t exactly ready but I knew what I intended to bring over so it didn’t take me long to get out the door.

It was nice to get to the studio a little earlier – more time for my stitching. After sitting a bit, putting away the bedding from last weekend and some reading I was ready to get going. I intended to get several Christmas-related projects moved along but when I opened my cupboard I couldn’t find them anywhere. I searched through everything several times and I’ve decided I must have taken them home to work on. At least I’ve now remembered the tin I put them in so they should be easy to find. Oh well, the Princess will keep me busy for all the days I’m here.

I’ll head home again on Sunday.
