Snow, movies and quilting

Friday, February 8, 2019

I’m still sorting out whether or not it was a good Guild meeting last night or a terrible one. On the good side my name was drawn for a gift certificate from the fabric shop and I got another lovely package from my Secret Pat. Also on the good side I got my name in for the Spring Retreat. It was only announced last night but my name is quite a way down on the list of participants. On the bad side though I have a new job for the quilt show. Someone brought me three bags full of magazines that she wanted me to offer for sale through the library (I have become somewhat of a dumping ground for this sort of thing). Another quilter said she had bags of magazines at home as well and she thought we should offer the magazines for sale at the show – she had been to a recent show in the Lower Mainland and said they made a ton of money through sales. So I’ll be manning the magazine table at the show, which is fine because I wasn’t signing up for any of the other duties thinking in my mind that I was going to be busy with door prizes throughout the day.

There has been a lot of snow since last night. It is the heavy sort that weighs down the tree branches. It snowed most of the morning, stopped for awhile, and then started again. It has stopped again now but we’re wondering what the roads will be like tonight as the temperature drops below zero.

I thought I might get at some quilting early this morning but when I woke up I realized that the stairway up to my sewing room was blocked with all the stuff I brought home from the meeting last night – those bags of magazines, several baskets to use for the prizes and a few donations for those baskets. So I went back to sleep for awhile. I quilted most of the morning but after lunch I lay down and finished reading my book. The film festival begins tonight so it will be better to be reading from my Kindle and I hate to be reading two books at the same time.

Yes, film festival is on for the next week. We’ll miss a few showings because of the House Concerts (and a quilting class I’m taking next Saturday)  but I’m sure I’ll feel I have seen enough by the end of next weekend.

I get to …

Thursday, February 7, 2019

I saw this on Facebook this morning:

Begin your day with an “I get to” mentality instead of a “I have to” thought process … I GET to go to work. I GET to have a busy day. Whatever it may be. We often dress our opportunities as stress, but they are in fact blessings.

So today I GET to:

  • finish laundry
  • bake cookies
  • clean toilets
  • write reports
  • prepare a deposit
  • write quilt show applications
  • catch up on my e-mail
  • pack a project for the afternoon sewing session
  • visit the bank
  • sew !!!
  • arrange platters of food
  • attend two meetings

It’s been a busy day

It’s been a busy day and it is nowhere near done. I got up early so I could get a bit of quilting done before the rest of the day got started. I had meetings scheduled for the Hall at ten and again at eleven so I knew the morning would be pretty much shot when that was done. I’ve started my cleaning for the upcoming House Concert on the weekend so I’ve done a bit of that whenever I had a few minutes to wait on something else.

My plan for the afternoon was to sandwich my Farmer’s Daughter quilt. Sandwiching is one of the longest parts of the process as once you start you need to finish it. With the sandwiching done even if I only have half an hour I can make some progress on the quilting (not that I’ve finished quilting my Farmer’s Wife). When I got started I realized I should stitch the extra blocks from Stacia and Deloise (and one from me) onto the backing before it was quilted. That took most of the afternoon.

I now have the backing spread out on the floor and I’ll start the sandwiching process. I’m sure that will take me all evening. I need to take treats to the Guild meeting tomorrow night and I also planned to make a batch of cookies tonight but I don’t think that will happen tonight.

Kung Hei Fat Choy

For whatever reason I remember when Elizabeth learned about the Chinese New Year at school. I think at one point we even made fortune cookies – they were messy and we never did it again. The greeting though has stayed with me. I’d like to go out for Chinese food tonight but Pat’s on Texada and I won’t go out alone. I’m crazy about getting this quilting done too so my nod to the new year will be an Asian salad mix!

I skipped the bee today, although I went in for a bit while they had lunch. It was a small crowd so either the weather kept people away or they are like me and quilting at home.
