Week 4 – Day Five

Fruit Basket

I had a very productive morning. I sewed the binding on my latest Community Quilt and got it ready for hand stitching. I made my block of the day – and all of that was done before noon.

After lunch (homemade bean & bacon soup) I went out and did a bit of yard work. The intent was only to cut the grass but when I was ready to go out one of the batteries for the mower was still charging. While I waited for it to charge up I pulled a few weeds. They aren’t bad yet but the morning glory was sprouting all over the beds.

The grass was really long so I went over it twice on two different settings on the mower. I thought I might have to rake between the mowings but Pat thought it would be okay to go over it right away. It worked fine; once the trimmings have dried out a bit I’ll rake them up and perhaps even go over it one setting lower.

By the time I showered I had pretty much run out of energy. I did a bit of tidying up in my sewing room so I’ll be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow. I was looking through my website and noticed that I had neglected to record a few projects. I’ll get them posted over the next few days.

I have a Guild block that needs to get done for whenever we get back to meeting; I may have time to get that done before retiring to knit or hand stitch that binding.

Footstool

I don’t know who names these blocks but this one reminded me that I have a tuffet, some fabric and a tuffet pattern – maybe that’s what I should be making. No rush I guess as the chair the tuffet is meant to go with is in the workshop on Texada.

I finished quilting on my donation quilt today. I’ll attached the binding tomorrow and I’ll have some hand stitching ready for the next few evenings; hand stitching (and knitting) are slow-going when we’re watching a foreign film on Netflix.

After hearing that the request to isolate may not be lifted until summer I mentioned to Pat that once it is lifted we eat out at our favourite restaurants every night for a month (if they even survive after this). One of our favourites (the one where we go to cooking classes) is offering take-out so that’s what we’re having tonight.

Week 4 – Day Three

Thursday, April 9, 2020

According to the news this morning this self-isolation may last for a few more months – it is getting harder and harder to keep track of what day of the week it is and how many days it has been since I’ve physically been in the company of anyone but Pat!

Five Patch Frame

I wanted today’s block to be a bit Easter-ish. All of the fabric comes from Diane’s bin – she liked florals and I had lots of colours to choose from.

Most of my morning was spent making cinnamon buns. After the disaster yesterday I was pleased with the process of making the dough with my Kitchen Aid mixer. We were able to have warm cinnamon buns for dessert with lunch (we never have dessert with lunch) and they were very good. Not as good as Mum’s but I think they were as good as Christy’s. They don’t take the place of the Hot Cross Buns I wanted but I’ll get over that.

For the rest of the day I’ve been quilting on one of my donation quilts. It is taking a long time even though the quilting pattern is quite simple. Oh well, I have nothing but time!

Eight Hands Around

With the exception of my block for the day and a video chat not much has gone according to my plan for the day. The block took forever – it will finish at 16″ and is the largest block so far. It used a lot of fabric and I’m pleased to see my bits & bobs of fabric pieces get used up. But the larger blocks require a larger piece of fabric so it eats into my stash quite quickly. No need for any online orders yet though.

After our video chat this morning I got everything loaded into the bread maker for cinnamon buns; Pat had been wanting them for awhile. I set my timer and continued to work upstairs until it was time to take the dough out of the pan. I’m not sure what went wrong but the ingredients didn’t mix and the whole thing had to be pitched. On first glance it seemed like maybe I had missed some liquid but I reviewed the recipe and I had everything it called for. I’m thinking now that whatever does the mixing in the bread maker may be broken. I’m going to try again tomorrow using my Kitchen Aid mixer; my wrists just won’t allow me to do the kneading that is required for dough.

Wednesday is meant to be a quilting day (in my mind at least) but since there is very little time left in the day I’ll work on my Thursday project (my April UFO Challenge) and get back to the quilting tomorrow.
