Way too hot

Monday, August 17, 2020

Last night before bed we sat out on the deck and watched a lightening storm all around us – no thunder but big swaths of sheet lightening. About an hour after I turned in there was lots of noise from either heavy rain or hail; it stopped and started three or four times. Pat brought a fan into the bedroom and it helped but it wasn’t a comfortable night. As we listened to the radio this morning it was already 24 degrees before eight. It is really hot today as well and unless we have a good cooling breeze tonight it will be uncomfortable again for sleeping.

The good news of the day is that our restoration has started. It’s been ten months since the flood and we had learned to live with the state of mess in the basement. They have started with the drywall in the bathroom and, over the next couple of weeks, they’ll get it all finished. Pat and I went out this morning and bought a new vanity, new faucets and a new toilet for the downstairs bathroom. Some of the “old” cabinetry we’ll move into the shed for storage and some of it we will take to Texada for the workshop.

Pat went across to the studio just after lunch today and I’ve been upstairs quilting. I’m working on a small-ish project and I don’t think it is responsible for the heat I’m feeling. There are nine blocks in the wall hanging I’m doing and I only have two finished so it will probably be cooler by the time I’m finishing up.

I have a good book and some hand stitching I can do while sitting under the ceiling fan in the living room.

Nothing

Sunday, August 16, 2020

You would think after a couple of days I’d have something positive to report, or something to show you. Well I have nothing. I can’t even say what I did on those days to waste all my time.

I know I did some yard work and somehow I managed to make a complete mess of my studio without having anything to show for it. I really thought I would get back to my machine today but that hasn’t happened; it is too hot upstairs now to spend any more time working.

We are ready for the restoration people to come in tomorrow morning. I had all of my bins moved out of the basement before Pat got back from Texada on Saturday; I helped him out a bit this morning in boxing up some of the small equipment but he is still working on taking his desk apart and clearing his electronics from the surfaces.

I’ve managed to do a bit of clean-up in my studio and I’m ready to hit the sewing machine whenever I get back to it. I have a birthday gift cut out and ready to stitch, I have two rows of my UFO ready to start stitching on (these rows were the ones that required all the templates), and I have the latest steps for my mystery quilt prepped and ready to sew.

I finished the latest clue in my Hex-Along but I’ve decided that before the project gets any larger I want to get the centre piece done. I have that all prepped and it will be my stitching project for the evening.

I’m glad that’s done

I went out to the grocery store first thing this morning, before I even had my coffee. I really didn’t want to go but I knew if I sat down with my coffee and my iPad I wouldn’t make it for the senior’s time slot.

Once I was home I got the garbage and recycle out to the curb. And when that was done I decided to tackle the rest of the recycling in the laundry room – cans, bottles and stuff for the depot. I got everything sorted out and put it all in my car for another day.

I wanted to hit both the bottle depot and the recycle depot when they first opened but I have a video chat tomorrow morning so it would be a couple of days before I could get it there and, in the heat, I didn’t think that was the best idea for my car.

So I checked the hours and hit them both closer to closing time. When I arrived at the bottle depot there weren’t too many people there but the cars started arriving shortly after. There was only one person ahead of me at the counter though so it moved quickly. The recycle depot was practically empty so I was able to unload all my bins one after another.

Once I was home I recycled all the drink boxes into the curb side pickup bin and brought the containers I wanted to keep for next time into the house. By then the garbage can and curb side recycle bin were ready to come back to the house.

I cut up a lot of apples today and got my applesauce made. They shrink down a lot and I only got one container rather than my usual three or four. That’s a good sign though as the better apples I freeze for apple crisp so there are probably more of them than usual. And I also managed to keep a few apples out for eating fresh.

I have a bit more work to do on my templates before supper but then I can cut out the pieces this evening. It feels like ages since I’ve stitched a seam but hopefully I’ll get there tomorrow.

Harvesting

Wednesday, August 12, 2020

For the last couple of days I’ve seen red through the leaves of the apple tree so I went out this morning to pick them. I don’t often get the variety of apple that turn red; we only get a few and they often fall to the ground before I get to them.

I picked two buckets full (from all the varieties) and they are soaking in the sink right now. I’ll sort through them and cut some for apple crisps, make some apple sauce with some and, maybe, I’ll be able to have a few fresh ones.

While I was in the yard I cut back a few of the daisies in the corner by the apple and then I started cutting back the grape and the wild morning glory. If left alone they both attach themselves to everything and could take over very quickly. I’m far from done but when I look out the window they aren’t the first thing I see. The mornings are a bit cooler these days so I’ll try to get out again tomorrow.

I didn’t do any sewing today but I did a lot of prep work. My next clue in the Hex-Along was released so I’ll get the fabric and templates cut tonight and maybe start basting them. I also drew all the templates for the aprons that will be on my Farmhouse quilt; lots more cutting for tonight.
