Challenges

Monday, November 2, 2020

On the first day of the month I’m supposed to find out what my monthly UFO will be. I noticed once before though that when the first falls on a weekend we don’t get the magic number until the following Monday. I only have two UFOs left on my list; they aren’t all finished but they have all seen significant progress. My options for this month were a project that involves some quilting and a fun project I started the last time Stacia, Deloise and I sewed together.

The UFO for this month is going to be my Limoncello. My notes indicate I started this in May of 2019 so it hasn’t been hanging around for too long. My Thursday sewing buddies each made the same pattern but, of course, they were all done in different colours. I purchased the fabric for this specifically because of the name.

The blocks are all finished and my intention is to use a quilt-as-you-go technique. I’ve only done this once before and this time I’m going to use a slightly different method. To add to the challenge I’m going to quilt each block by using some of the quilting rulers I’ve purchased and, up to now, been afraid to use.

It used to be easier

Pat bought a new-to-us chair a little while ago. We had it delivered and I was able to bring it in off the back deck on my own. I didn’t like the feel of it but it stayed where it was until the next time Pat came home.

Pat felt the same as I did about the chair so we decided to do some furniture switching. The chair I currently used for watching TV would come back to the living room, the “new” chair would move up-upstairs to the room across from where I sew, and the swivel rocker in that room would move to the basement as my TV chair.

While Pat was away this time I moved the footstool from the “new” rocker upstairs but there was no way I could make any of the other changes on my own. I remember a time when it would have been nothing for me to whip chairs up and/or down and rearrange any number of pieces of furniture.

Today we tackled the move of the furniture and it wasn’t easy – it was hard for both of us. Pat eventually took one chair out the front door, around the sidewalk and in through the back door because we couldn’t get it through a doorway. We had a similar struggle getting the swivel rocker down the two flights of stairs and through a door. The only easy part was moving the “new” rocker upstairs – it is light and not nearly as wide as those other pieces.

I’m looking forward to trying out the chair with my knitting and some TV later tonight.

Happy Hallowe’en

Ghost Walk (Block 138)

I haven’t made a daily block for quite awhile as I always seem to have something more important to work on. I didn’t have anything in particular planned for today and this block seemed like a fun one to use with some of my novelty fabric.

I sent out masks with a Hallowe’en them awhile ago. Most of my grandkids won’t be out Trick or Treating, and the one that is asked for a cow mask for her and her friend (which I neglected to take a photo of before sending them off in the mail). Hopefully they had a chance to wear their Hallowe’en ones somewhere and, fingers crossed, they won’t need them next year.

Side affects

Earlier this afternoon the title of this piece was going to be “What a great day” but I didn’t have a great afternoon and I needed to blame it on something (not me!).

I worked on a 12-Days project this morning until it was time to go for my shingles vaccine. My plan then was to come home, have lunch and spend the first part of my afternoon finishing up my Hex-Along and maybe finish off a knitting project. I had a couple of seasons of an old favourite to watch on Amazon Prime so I was set.

Four hexies had to be stitched together added to two other hexies and then attached to the “mother ship”. I put them together in sets of three but when I went to attach them they didn’t fit. I realized I might have stitched the four pieces together wrong so I took them apart. Then I lay them out again and I still couldn’t see what was wrong. Eventually, by supper time, I had managed to see my error, put it right and get them attached. I still need to attach this centre to a background but for now the hardest part is done.

I’m almost afraid to post this picture to the Facebook group in case I made another mistake. If I did, it’s too late and I won’t be fixing it.

And you are wondering about the side effects? The pharmacist warned me that this shingles shot might give me more problems than the flu shots I regularly get – flu-like symptoms for a couple of days. So far I’m good but I’m wondering if it was the shingles shot that made me stupid!
