Happy Birthday Rick

Top of the Hill (a Splendid Sampler bonus block)

At the time I made Rick’s card I hoped that by the time his birthday came around we would be at the top of the hill of this Covid-19 pandemic. I’m not convinced we are there yet.

I’m glad I picked a whimsical backing on the block to lighten the mood just a bit.

Happy Birthday Pat

In the Sunshine (from the Splendid Sampler series)

I’m happy with this card except for one of my choices of fabric for the 9-patch that is hidden beneath the appliqué. That little bit of yellow should have been a better contrast for what is supposed to be the “flag” in the centre.

The sunshine and moon fabric is one of the first fabrics I bought when I started quilting. I have no idea where I bought it, but I’ve used it on several items that I’ve sent to Diane.

I wanted to do some quick quilting on this so rather than change to my walking foot I simply did a bit of a free-hand curved line.

Happy Birthday Madison

Fleur-de-Lei

I’m not fond of appliqué but this was one of the few blocks left to do in the Splendid Sampler book.

I tried to use the Give & Take appliqué technique that I learned in a Guild workshop from Daphne Greig from Victoria. I didn’t bother looking anything up as I assumed I would remember how it went. I almost got it but the second block didn’t turn out to be the mirror image of this one (as it should have been). I know I have some other patterns from this designer so I’ll have a chance to refresh my memory and try again.

Happy Birthday Emma

Button Basket

Emma’s gift was sent to her from online but I was able to send her card. I know the stamp to use for my “cards” but anything extra tucked inside can change the amount of postage I need.

This block, from the Splendid Sampler series, is close to the last block in the book.

I’m not sure why anyone would choose to keep their buttons in a basket, but maybe someone does.
