Quilted Hearts (from The Crafty Quilter)

This pattern was a freebie from one of the blogs I follow. I’ve looked at it often but this is the year I finally got around to making it.

It was a really quick finish, although I didn’t exactly follow the pattern. The heart was supposed to be stuffed and have some buttons attached but I know from past experience that adding those things would make it too large to go as a large letter at the post office and, therefore, cost way more than any of the parts were worth.

And in case you are thinking “Why only two”, Kathryn got her valentine as her calendar block.

Fresh Start (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

As I was making this card we were living in a winter wonderland. Lovely-looking snow one day but not-so-nice slush and rain the next, and then a repeat a few days later.

I don’t usually sew with batiks but I think I was wanting a fresh start. You can’t beat the colours in batik fabric and, having dug some out for this card, I’ve picked another project to do with the fabrics.

With more winter weather in Saskatchewan I expect Kevin is hoping for a fresh start in Spring.

Calendar Block – February

Not a big surprise that for February Kathryn’s Calendar block is a heart. I swear I’ve made this pattern (or one very similar) in different sizes many times over the years.

Kathryn mentioned that she wasn’t sure she wanted to be cutting onions on her cutting board with last month’s snowman underneath. This month I used some food-related fabric for the back. And that reminded me of a bunch of food-related hexagons that I ended up with when I purchased a bag of fabric scraps (and I know who it was that snuck them in there!). I’ll have to find them and maybe put them together for future backings.

Antique Memories (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

I enjoyed making this card. Based on its name I tried to find fabrics that I might have used over the years for various things I’ve made for Taylor. I can see fabric from two sets of curtains I’ve made for her as well as fabric I used for the gym bag I made for her several years ago. Some of the other fabrics were used for items for other grandchildren and, who knows, some of the fabrics may have made it into her other cards.

My youngest granddaughter is 12 today – where has the time gone?
