Happy Birthday Kathryn

January 4, 2022

(from Quiltish Corner)

When I visited Kathryn in the fall she mentioned that she wished she’d had more blocks to put under the glass cutting board that sits on her counter. I had already started downloading a series of calendar blocks without any idea of how I would use them. They are a perfect size for Kathryn’s cutting board so, suddenly, I had a plan.

I used some curved stitching for the quilting – I wasn’t sure I could do it without free-motion but it worked well enough that I’ll keep it in mind for future projects. I did some thread painting for the arms – again a first for me. I wish he had more of a smile but perhaps getting back into the routine of things after Christmas warrants a grimace!

Kathryn will receive a new block every month – or maybe a couple during certain months.

Happy Birthday Dave

Metropolis (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

Of all the December birthdays Dave is the only one who could be considered to be living in a Metropolis. Does Saskatoon have that many skyscrapers?

I was able to gift Dave a pair of felt liners that a friend of mine makes. I’ve given Kevin a substantial amount of wool each time I’ve done a cleaning so you might say I helped make them.

Happy Birthday Dylan

Come Together (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

Dylan’s birthday is so close to Christmas that one wish list serves both purposes. I looked at his list and saw Lego at the bottom of it (most of the other things I didn’t even know what they were). Sadly the Lego he wanted was way, way beyond my budget and so was everything else. I think he knew he’d probably be getting a gift card but he said he wanted a present he could open.

I managed to get him a little something he can open on his birthday. I still remember the day Christy announced his expected arrival – an earlier date than he actually arrived on. I also remember the day we were waiting on his arrival – at the Greyhound bus depot sending off Christmas packages.

I cannot believe he will be 16!

Happy Birthday Brian

Star Light, Star Bright (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

For a long time I thought Brian’s birthday was the 10th. Many years ago, after Diane’s Mum passed away, Brian said he missed getting cards in the mail for his birthday. Since then I’ve been making sure he gets a card mailed to him so having the extra day probably helped to get his cards to him on time.

I hadn’t made any of these blocks in awhile so I dug out my glue to help align those small pieces. I don’t know why I don’t use it all the time because it works so well.
