Author: Steve Cavanagh

This book came to me from Kathryn.

You know from the cover that the story involves a murder, a trial and a jury. But getting through all the details is quite a ride! Trying to figure out who the next victim would be, who the rogue juror was, and how he was going to be caught weren’t explained until the end of the book. And I wanted to go right back to the beginning to see if I missed a clue I should have picked up on.

The Crow Trap

Author: Ann Cleeves

This is the first book in the Vera series by Ann Cleeves. I’ve read two of the books further on in the series so it was fun to see how Vera was first introduced, although that doesn’t happen until a long way into the book.

There are a lot of characters and a lot of suspects for the murderer. I didn’t figure it out and it wasn’t revealed until the last few pages. I don’t feel too badly though as I don’t think there were any clues along the way that would have led me to the conclusion.

A Charmed Life

Author: Mary McCarthy

When I downloaded this book for my Kindle I was thinking of another author that I’ve read and enjoyed – Mary McGarry Morris. You can see how I might have made that mistake right?

Well this book is not by the same author and I didn’t enjoy it. The story more or less follows the lives of a group of friends in a small town in New England (although the stodginess of the characters puts me more in mind of a small town in England). Things get complicated when an ex-wife and ex-husband reunite for a one-night-stand and then some of the characters have to deal with the consequences. The ending was sudden and surprising – if the ending I imagined was the ending the author was aiming for.

Any book that makes me look up the definition of three words before I’m even done the first chapter is not for me.

The Wife Between Us

Author: Greer Hendriks & Sarah Pekkanen

I was confused – very confused – and then I thought the whole thing was just silly.

The first part of the book was excellent. The story follows Vanessa, Richard’s ex-wife, and Nellie, the woman he is about to marry.

In part two of the book we find out that Vanessa and Nellie are the same person. We get a clearer picture of Richard and Vanessa’s attempts to break up the engagement of Richard and his new love.

By then end of the book it was just too much that Vanessa’s therapist was Richard’s first wife.

I’ve revealed a lot of the twists in the book but I don’t think it matters as I wouldn’t suggest you read it. That being said, it did get a lot of good ratings on Goodreads.
