A Town Called Solace

Author: Mary Lawson

I read another book by this author (Crow Lake) but I can’t seem to find a review; I know I liked it but I had more or less forgotten about following her newer books. It was Regan that put her back on my list.

The book is long listed for the Booker Prize. I often have trouble with their winners but this one would be an easy read.

The story is told from the point of view of three main characters – Elizabeth, Clara and Liam. Not all of their narratives are told in chronological order but it is in no way confusing. There are no dramatics, just a lovely story that might have a good or a terrible ending.

I have her other two books on order from the library.

The Last Letter from your Lover

Author: Jojo Moyes

Although this book was written only a few years before the other books of this author that I have read (Me Before You and After You) it reads like it could be from a different generation. That being said, I liked this one as much as I did those others.

Jennifer, a wealthy wife, and Anthony, a journalist, are star-crossed lovers. It is clear to both of them that they are meant to be together but their timing is always just a bit off. The novel spans a 40-year period and we find out about their lives individually and the few times when they are together. It takes another generation of journalists to bring them back together.

Grown Ups

Author: marian keyes

Thick books about families are always a favourite. In this case the family consists of three brothers, their wives, their children and their exes.

Johnny and Jessie were work partners before they married. They have loads of money (it would seem) and happily spend it on lavish events and vacations for everyone. Ed and Cara struggle to keep up with their bills but are very happily married until an eating disorder threatens everything. Liam and Nell are newlyweds after Liam’s divorce from his first wife; Nell is much younger than Liam but they seem happy. As Johnny’s 49th birthday approaches all hell is going to break loose.

Tear Me Apart

Author: J.T. Ellison

Mindy and her parents, Jasper and Lauren, appear to be the perfect family. They live in a skiing town and Mindy is about to make the US Olympic Ski Team. When a terrible accident on the slopes breaks her leg Mindy is out of the competition for the moment. But as doctors are repairing her leg they find she has an aggressive form of leukaemia. As the search for a stem cell donor begins the secrets Lauren has been hiding start to be revealed. She is trying desperately to keep it all together but will she succeed?

I stayed up until after midnight last night so I could finish the book, not because it needed to be back at the library but because I had to know how it was going to turn out.
