Hunger’s Brides

Author: Paul Anderson

After 1300 odd (and I mean odd) pages you’d expect a feeling of accomplishment. I should have known better from the words “A Novel of the Baroque”. What does that even mean?

I can hardly wait to get the book out of the house but there is no one I know that I can pass it along to. There are a few book exchange cabinets around town and that may be the final resting place for this tome.

The Silent Sister

Author: Diane Chamberlain

silent-sisterAlthough I’m in the middle of another book, I took a break and read the book that Kathryn gave me for my birthday. It was on my Goodreads list and is by a favourite author. Plus, we were about to leave on a short holiday so the timing was perfect.

There are so many surprises and twists in this book it will make your head spin. As always, Chamberlain’s stories are quite believable. I notice that this is the first book in a series but I’m having trouble finding #2.

The Distant Hours

Author: Kate Morton

Distant HoursI like a story that is told in a linear fashion; this wasn’t one of those as it popped back and forth between the early 90’s and the English countryside during the Second World War.

The story was intriguing though with enough mysteries to keep me interested. The answer to “who done it” wasn’t one I could have guessed. I don’t remember the other books by this author having a twist at the end, but it was nice.

This book was on “my list” so I was happy when Kathryn passed it to me on a recent trip, but I was disappointed in the book. The story revolves around Grace, a psychologist, and a few characters that are connected to her. The stories are told in flashes of time, sometimes current but often flashbacks, which I found confusing. To be fair though, I read the book over a long period of time and that may have led to more confusion than was necessary.
