Primitive Pinwheels

Primitive Pinwheels
(from Primitive Gatherings)

I love pinwheels and I didn’t pass up on the opportunity to make some for the May miniature meeting. I wasn’t even discouraged when I noticed on the pattern that the blocks were only 1.75″ when they were finished.

The pattern, ruler and fabric in the pinwheels all came from my Guild’s Secret Pal. Although the ruler isn’t called a Lil’ Twister the technique used for the pinwheels is the same. Now that I’ve tried a small version I’m not tempted to make any of the larger Lil’ Twister patterns.

I pieced the initial blocks together at the Spring Retreat but I was afraid to cut into them with a crowd around. Once I was home it didn’t take long to get the pieces cut out (I was thankful for my turntable cutting board) and stitched back together.

With the exception of the stabilizing stitches around the edges there isn’t any quilting on the piece. I broke four needles (and quilted about three blocks) before deciding that an 11″ x 12.75″ mini really didn’t require any quilting.

It must be summer

In spite of the rain we’ve had all day, summer is definitely here. I drove to the Hall after sewing and came home along Marine Drive. The 30 km speed signs are up at Willingdon Beach and that’s a sure sign of summer.

I had a good session at the bee today. Everyone loved my miniature quilt and they decided that next month they are going to have a workshop and everyone will make one like it. That will be the last meeting until the fall; I won’t be able to be at the June meeting so I’m done with my miniatures for awhile.

I had a couple of gift projects that I took to work on; I knew they would be quick but I had them pretty much done before lunch. After lunch I took apart my mistake in my HST quilt, fixed it up, and stitched it all back together. I like a day where I actually accomplish something.

I was not alone

I was back in the yard working again today; the lilacs are still putting out their scent and, since I was cutting it back, I had some lovely lavender scents. Pat came out and did some trimming as well – some of the bushes have received hair cuts and he mowed and raked the grass. It’s nice to have company while I work.

After lunch I did a bit of paperwork for myself and the Hall. I was just finishing up some Hall work when I checked the mail and we have had another resignation from our Board (for health reasons, not anything we did wrong). We have two new members we expect will come on and we were looking forward to having one extra person over the past year’s count. Now we are back to the same number so no chance to spread the load a little thinner.

I’ve got the binding ready to be hand stitched to my miniature quilt; I’ll do that this evening. I finished up a major portion of my knitting project last night and I hope I’ll have time to get started on the border tonight. I have five new (small) projects ready for the bee tomorrow, as well as my HST quilt that still needs some correction.

The Ice Child

Author: Camilla Lackberg

This book and a couple of others that I really want to read have been sitting on top of the bookcase in the hallway for ages. I was walking down the hall at some point when I was ready to start a new book and picked it up.

There is something about those Scandinavian writers (Jo Nesbø, Stieg Larsson) that really know what they are doing when it comes to writing mysteries. This author is from Sweden and I put her right up there with the best of them.

There are a lot of characters in the book and I often had to pause to remember what the relationships were between characters. It wasn’t until the last chapter that I found out “who done it” and what was going on. And then, on the last two pages there was another big twist. Although you might be tempted to read from the back before you get there, don’t!
