Back to normal

I think things are back to normal for me again, although yesterday felt a lot like Sunday and I feel like I should still be on holiday for a few more days.

This morning I got show tickets ready for the Hall, as well as a deposit. I did a bit of Guild work so I’d be ready for the meeting tonight. Before I knew it it was time to head out for some errands before sewing.

I have been working on a flannel quilt on Thursdays and it is nice to be able to leave everything at Gail’s between sessions. I have two rows together and the other three rows are ready to be attached. We thought we might have to cancel our retreat but we talked to Jessie today; her husband is much better and she expects to be back next week. We are working on a group project for the weekend; there was also talk of working on UFOs.

I’m off to a Guild meeting tonight but before that starts we have a Hands Across the Water planning meeting. It is our turn to host so we have a bit of work to do. So far I’ve managed not to sign up for anything. The event isn’t until October so there is still lots of time to get guilted into something.

Catching Up

Wednesday, January 1, 2020

I wonder how long is it going to take me to write 2020 naturally, without having to stop and remember that we’ve moved into a new decade. I pre-wrote my journal entries between Christmas and now so it is a bit of a reality check for me to get back to a daily post.

We had a great holiday season. Our trip to Victoria was lovely and we enjoyed some quiet time. Many of the restaurants that we wanted to dine at were closed for the holidays so that was a bit of a disappointment. I looked forward to shopping but found that the stores in the downtown area cater mainly to the tourist crowd. Even the stores in the mall were less than spectacular. That said, I managed to find items for my three January birthday packages. We attended a lovely choral concert that also featured a five-piece brass ensemble. It was held in Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest church in Victoria, and the sound was amazing. On the way home we had time for a visit with Peggy and Bill, as well as a Costco shop.

On the days between I’ve been puttering in my sewing room, napping and generally being lazy. I have a cold and I’m using that as an excuse for a nap most afternoons.

I stitched yesterday with the Guild and I’ll start back with my Thursday group tomorrow. Today the first UFO Challenge number was released – I’ll be working on my Disappearing 9-Patch. The blocks are done but I want to try a Quilt As You Go technique so I have some studying to do before starting.

I’ve also spent a good deal of time reading and knitting – I never run out of books to read or things to knit!

Triangular Shawl

This yarn came out of the bin I found in my closet. I can’t say when it was purchased but I know for certain it was when I was in Yellowknife and probably when I had the wool shop.

Because of the texture in the yarn I knew the pattern I used couldn’t be too complicated – taking out stitches would be a nightmare. I used the Triangular Shawl pattern, starting out with one stitch and increasing every row until I ran out of yarn. This is another benefit of the pattern – you just work until it is done.

You can see the texture of the yarn here but the first photo is true to the colour.

I usually save my knitting until the end of the year and pass it on to the Salvation Army. I thought this one was too nice to store for a year so I contacted the Church where we quilt. They run a Prayer Shawl program and were happy to have it. In fact, it was given away almost immediately to a woman who had lost her son unexpectedly.

This is actually a 2019 finish but since it didn’t get recorded in my “End of Year” review I’m moving it forward to 2020.

Her Sister’s Bones

Author: Geraldine Hogan

Detective Iris Locke has been working undercover although what she really wants is an assignment to the murder section. She get’s her wish when she is sent to Limerick to assist in the deaths of a mother and her two children. Not only does Locke have to deal with new colleagues but she also is the daughter of a well-respected Inspector who worked out of the same squad.

This is the first in a series. I enjoyed the writing and I liked the characters. The second book in the series has been released and I’ve ordered it with an amazon card that I received for Christmas.
