Fruit Basket

I had a very productive morning. I sewed the binding on my latest Community Quilt and got it ready for hand stitching. I made my block of the day – and all of that was done before noon.

After lunch (homemade bean & bacon soup) I went out and did a bit of yard work. The intent was only to cut the grass but when I was ready to go out one of the batteries for the mower was still charging. While I waited for it to charge up I pulled a few weeds. They aren’t bad yet but the morning glory was sprouting all over the beds.

The grass was really long so I went over it twice on two different settings on the mower. I thought I might have to rake between the mowings but Pat thought it would be okay to go over it right away. It worked fine; once the trimmings have dried out a bit I’ll rake them up and perhaps even go over it one setting lower.

By the time I showered I had pretty much run out of energy. I did a bit of tidying up in my sewing room so I’ll be ready to hit the ground running tomorrow. I was looking through my website and noticed that I had neglected to record a few projects. I’ll get them posted over the next few days.

I have a Guild block that needs to get done for whenever we get back to meeting; I may have time to get that done before retiring to knit or hand stitch that binding.

Shortcake (Miniatures)

I bought a booklet with eight patterns on a trip to Saskatoon and decided for my miniatures I would go through the book and make each one in order.

I made this miniature top when I was quilting with Stacia and Deloise last fall. I had it in a package to take to Texada to do the quilting. I hope that it was because I didn’t have the right sized scraps that this ended up so wonky.

When it was nearing time for another miniature meeting at the Guild I pulled out my book and started piecing. This time I used the precision piecing method (gluing each seam before sewing) and it came out much better. Note to self – always use the precision piecing method when you are dealing with squares as small as 1.5″.

It wasn’t until I was quilting the two of them one after the other that I realized how similar they were. Could that be right? Surely I hadn’t made the same pattern twice.

That, in fact, is exactly what I did. They ended up in two different sizes so they could be passed off as different I guess, and the wonkiness of one makes it appear quite different from the other.

Happy Birthday Madison

Fleur-de-Lei

I’m not fond of appliqué but this was one of the few blocks left to do in the Splendid Sampler book.

I tried to use the Give & Take appliqué technique that I learned in a Guild workshop from Daphne Greig from Victoria. I didn’t bother looking anything up as I assumed I would remember how it went. I almost got it but the second block didn’t turn out to be the mirror image of this one (as it should have been). I know I have some other patterns from this designer so I’ll have a chance to refresh my memory and try again.

Footstool

I don’t know who names these blocks but this one reminded me that I have a tuffet, some fabric and a tuffet pattern – maybe that’s what I should be making. No rush I guess as the chair the tuffet is meant to go with is in the workshop on Texada.

I finished quilting on my donation quilt today. I’ll attached the binding tomorrow and I’ll have some hand stitching ready for the next few evenings; hand stitching (and knitting) are slow-going when we’re watching a foreign film on Netflix.

After hearing that the request to isolate may not be lifted until summer I mentioned to Pat that once it is lifted we eat out at our favourite restaurants every night for a month (if they even survive after this). One of our favourites (the one where we go to cooking classes) is offering take-out so that’s what we’re having tonight.
