Road Ends

Author: Mary Lawson

This is another book where the author uses three main characters to tell the story. Edward, the father, has mainly removed himself from his family (his wife and eight children) by going to work and hiding in his study when he is at home. His eldest son, Tom, has a degree in aeronautical engineering but because of his depression over the suicide of a friend is currently driving a snowplough. Meg, his only daughter, has taken care of the family since she was a very young girl but has recently started a new life in England.

I can’t say this is a happy story but it seems quite real. I would have liked a different ending but I’m satisfied with what the author gave me.

September Miniature

~ 13″ x 17″

When the September sewing date with Stacia and Deloise arrived I was barely ready. The kids had just left, everything in my sewing room was a disaster but at least I knew what fabric I wanted to use and where that particular bin was in the pile.

I barely had time to get the top done during our sewing day and it wasn’t until a couple of days later that I sat down to quilt and finish it.

Now that it is done I think it is one of my favourite miniatures. It will hang on the stairwell but I’ll first have to decide which of the other things hanging there need to come down.

Afghan

I’ve had this crochet pattern for years; it was cut from a magazine probably while I was still living up North. The pattern appealed because it looked so very soft and it was done in a wash of colours. I pulled what I thought was the last of my Misty yarn (I’ve since found more) and decided to make the pattern up using yarn that I had. I had to play around quite a bit with the hook size to get it as soft as I wanted but I am pleased with the results. The variegated yarn worked well in the pattern.

When Christy and the kids were here they were going through my quilts and wall hangings and picking out some to take home. Taylor saw my almost-finished afghan and noted how soft it was (mission accomplished apparently). She didn’t ask me if she could have it but her Mum said if it wasn’t for someone in particular Taylor would really like it.

I finished the stitching (and the yarn) on the weekend and it will be off to Taylor.

Happy Birthday Jackie

Vintage Flower Basket
(from the Splendid Sampler series)

I know Jackie grows a garden each year but she has never mentioned that she grows flowers. This bouquet is the kind that doesn’t take any looking after.

As Jackie celebrates her 70th I can’t help but think how much the McKnight women would have missed over the years if she hadn’t held that first get-together at the farm 20 years ago.
