From Here to Eternity

Author: James Jones

When I bought this book from a Library Book Sale I was sure it was a classic. I like to read classics around Christmas and this is the one I picked for this year. I had the classic movie scene in my head of the couple on the beach with the waves crashing over them.

I’m a little at a loss with the book though as I really didn’t like it – the men in the Army before Pearl Harbour weren’t much more than womanizing, drunken idiots. And they didn’t get much better after Pearl Harbour (but then the book ends very soon after the incident). It’s a big book – about 850 pages – and you can imagine my horror when the hero (or at least who I thought was going to be the hero) ended up being shot by his own servicemen.

Perhaps I’d have been better off watching the movie. When I checked IMDb to be sure I was thinking of the right movie it was interesting to see the actors who played the roles of the characters in the book.

I’ll put the book on my Classic shelf but it won’t be one I read again. It was published in 1951 – does that make it valuable?

Happy 40th Birthday Kathryn

January 4, 2019

Card Trick (from 501 Rotary-Cut Quilt Blocks)

First card of the New Year and the birthday is a big one. I don’t know how Kathryn got to be this age without me getting any older!

Kaffe Fassett

I used some of the Kaffe Fassett fabrics that were left from my Farmer’s Daughter blocks. It is lovely to be far enough along that I can start using the scraps. And I never use that line of fabric without remembering how much I enjoyed hearing him speak at the Houston International Quilt Show a couple of years ago.

I finally started

I think all my mind needed was a clean sewing room because as soon as I finished the vacuuming I was ready to sew. I stitched up a few items that Taylor had sent home with me, and I had time this morning before my ten o’clock meeting to get her card finished. After getting the garbage and recycling to the curb I headed to City Hall to get some information I needed for the Hall.

And then, finally, I started quilting Taylor’s birthday gift. What I thought I was going to do turned out to be something quite different from what I’m doing, but at least I’m making progress.

It was time

I had a plan for today but, as often happens, things don’t go as planned. It was to be a sewing afternoon but I thought I would start on some quilting this morning. There were a few things from last night’s meeting that had to be done first thing and by the time that was done I felt I couldn’t carry on with anything else until I cleaned up my sewing room. I had bags that we brought back from Texada, my Guild meeting bag from last month was still sitting waiting for some cleaning out, and don’t even get me started on my Tuesday bin or my Cranberry Hall bag. I scheduled my clean-up to carry on until it was time to leave for sewing.

But mid-morning (it felt much later because I was up at six) Gail called me to say her power was off. I can’t say I was too disappointed even though I already had my bag packed with a couple of projects. When I went downstairs for lunch I started taking down and packing away the Christmas decorations. We are having a stormy day so I haven’t moved them out to the shed; I’ll do that when the weather calms down a bit. I’m going to miss the tree and Mr. Snowman because I’ve had them on every morning and evening since the beginning of December.

As I was finishing up my packing Gail called to say her power was back on but I decided not to go out. I was able to use the time to organize a few projects and bins in my sewing room; I even vacuumed and now I’m ready to get started on some sewing.

I doubt I’ll get very far with that today though as I have two Guild meetings tonight – a quilt show meeting and our regular business meeting. And before I head out to them I need to stop at Staples to pick up a printing order – all of those donation letters will be ready for our President to sign.

But starting tomorrow I’m going to be quilting non-stop (after I check on a Hall issue at City Hall, get some cheques signed and delivered, and sort out an insurance decision).
