Well they aren’t actually toys, but they are new to my studio and I’m very happy with them.
Today was my first chance to try out my new iron. It beeps, has flashing lights, and works like a charm. It took me some time to understand what the lights were telling me but once I figured it out it isn’t much different from the ones we have at the Guild.
I do a lot of paper piecing and have tried a number of types of paper. The first class I took with the Guild was on paper piecing. We used a foundation paper and traced the pattern. At a yard sale a year or so ago I picked up some heavier tissue paper that was meant (I think) as a drawer liner. It worked well but you still had to trace the pattern.
At the Log Cabin with a Twist demo (at the Guild) the instructor talked about foundation paper that could go through the printer. I couldn’t get any locally but started using a lighter weight writing paper. The pattern could be printed on it, but the size wasn’t quite right so you had to fiddle with the settings when you printed.
When I was in Saskatoon (and shopping with Stacia and Deloise) I asked a couple of shops about the foundation paper. They said I should just get some newsprint, and that I could get it at the dollar store. When I came home I checked our dollar stores (yes, we have two) but neither of them had it. I even went to Staples, but they don’t sell newsprint. They did sell me some onion skin paper but it just jams my printer.
Today I went to WalMart specifically looking for paper. I found a huge pad of newsprint. It is larger than I need, but I can cut each page down and get two 8 ½” x 11” sheets. I used it when working on some cards today and it is just what I need. I’m more anxious than ever to start work my Farmer’s Wife Quilt Sampler knowing I won’t have to trace all 111 blocks.
I’m responsible for cooking supper tonight. I’m working the BOND lunch on Monday and the menu called for Crock Pot Lasagna. When I checked out the recipes they all take at least four hours, and I don’t have enough time. I mentioned it to the BOND coordinators (who plan the menu) and they said they saw the recipe and thought it sounded good but didn’t really think about the time issue. I found a recipe for Sloppy Joe Squares that I’d like to use instead, but I need to test them before planning to serve it to a group of hungry ladies.
It is SeaFair this weekend, and the musical entertainment starts tonight at Willingdon Beach. No one is playing that I’m interested in hearing so I’m hoping we’ll go to the movies instead – The Lone Ranger starts tonight.
