Finally, a few stitches

Thursday, June 7, 2018

I spent a bit of time with my cross stitch this morning – I like to do a bit each day with my coffee (and it keeps me away from games on my iPad). Sadly the last strand I worked with all had to be taken out as I misread the pattern. Oh well, by now I have it restitched and can start fresh tomorrow morning.

I had a massage today; since I started working in the garden I’ve had a very sore neck. Pat says it is probably from reaching too far to grab at the weeds. Carrying heavy packages last week at the show didn’t help any either. When I was finished I asked if I should book another appointment. The therapist said, “You are definitely twisted so it would probably be a good idea”. It’s okay if a medical professional calls you twisted isn’t it?

We were only a group of two at sewing this afternoon. Jessie is on a trip to the East Coast for a month. Apparently the week I was away they didn’t even sew – they sat on the deck and chatted. So the bags didn’t get any closer to being done; I made some progress on mine this week and I think the worst of the stitching is done. Gail spent the afternoon on her computer with brief interruptions to tell me “You need to see this”!

I’m off to the Guild meeting tonight.

Another desk day

Wednesday, June 6, 2018

I’ve spent another full day at my desk. I met a renter at the Hall this morning at nine but I was only home for about an hour before heading out the door for another appointment at 10:30. I had a few errands to take care of and it was noon before I was home again. I did a bit of cleaning while I waited for another renter to come by the house, and then I headed back upstairs for more sorting out.

I have a full day tomorrow and I knew there would be no time to get my Guild reports ready so I finished them this afternoon. Not only is it our regular business meeting, but it is also our Annual General Meeting. Three reports for each meeting leaves me with six reports to present. Next I’ll have to start work on my Cranberry Hall reports for Friday.

I had a bit of time yesterday to sort through some of my Farmer’s Daughter blocks. I had a revelation regarding the project while we were at Quilt Canada and I bought a few more fabrics from the same designer in order to have enough fabric to work around the changes I plan to make. I didn’t get very far, but I know I need only a few more blocks of some of the neutral colours so I’ll start on those.

My Challenge for June (because I swapped out some of the projects to make it happen) is my Farmer’s Wife quilt. I thought I had about 80 of the blocks done but it turns out my notes show me with 93 blocks completed. I may want to redo some of my early blocks but I’ll work at getting the remainder of them sewn first. So, in case I ever do get back to sewing I at least have a couple of projects ready to work on.

I sat and enjoyed a bit of crocheting last night. I’ve decided to use the pattern I’ve been working on in another afghan that will use up my scraps of yarn. The pattern will be the same on this scrap project, but the rows won’t be planned; I’ll work with a colour until it runs out and then add another whether or not it is at the beginning, middle or end of the row.

I’m off to the movies tonight – it has been so long since I’ve seen a movie and I’m really looking forward to this one.

Mustard Seed

Author: Laila Ibrahim

I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this sequel to Yellow Crocus, but I did. All the main characters are back and, after the Civil War has ended, they are pulled, for various reasons, back to the South. Conditions there are hardly any better for the “freed” slaves and it looks as though they may never get back to their lives in Ohio.

What fun!

Tuesday, June 5, 2018

I arrived home yesterday afternoon and I’ve been “sorting myself out” since then. I unpacked last night but that was the easy part – I had laundry to do and it took more than a few trips to get all my new purchases upstairs. I’ve spent all day today catching up on my e-mail, work for the Hall and preparing for a couple of meetings later in the week.

So grown up!

Apparently the water isn’t cold – like I believe that!

I spent a weekend plus a couple of days at Christy’s; if you don’t visit on a weekend you don’t get to see much of the kids as they are in school. I met their puppy (yes, they tell me George is still a puppy) and after initially not taking to one another we got along fine after a few minutes. Taylor and I taught him to swim – can you believe they already are swimming in the creek on a regular basis. Dylan kept me company at home on Monday but they were both off to school again on Tuesday. There was a bit of mending and hemming to be done but, aside from reading, I didn’t do much.

I remember “doing” Dad’s hair but I think Taylor has real talent in that category.

There was much excitement when Rick’s classic car returned from an extended stay (7-8 years) in the States. And speaking of Rick he was very patient with Taylor when she “did” his hair!

Best table in the house thanks to Trevor

This really is a thing!

On Wednesday I met Stacia and Deloise for the Quilt Canada conference. So much shopping and so many beautiful quilts. Trevor met us the first night for supper, he joined us on Granville Island for supper one night (yes Christy, I stopped at Rogers), and he provided an evening full of entertainment when he took us to the Facial Hair Fashion Show at one of the establishments he works in.

On our last day we had a good visit with Caye, Paul, Frank and Willa. The only bit of rain we had was walking a few blocks from our bus stop to their facility. We could have transferred to another bus but it meant waiting 25 minutes for a three minute ride – so glad Deloise caught that!

Can I get it done before the first House Concert of the fall season?

This Sashiko panel was an exciting find (thanks to Deloise)

I brought home a fair number of new things – a lot of gadgets, a few patterns, fabric for specific projects I will be doing, and a couple of things I purchased because I wanted to. Somehow I will have to find time to add them to my already-long list of things I’m working on; before we head off to the next show in Edmonton (in 2020) I want to have at least a few of them done!
